What a race it would be …
There’s always talk about dream matchups when it comes to high school football. For one, I’d like to see Odessa Permian tangle with Massillon — two schools with the biggest collective egos, by far.
When it comes to cross country, there is usually not a problem. Find a big named meet like the Tiffin Carnival, Spartan Invitational and others and you’ll find great head-to-head competition — packs against packs.
If there’s one race I’d like to see is Maplewood’s Eric Rupe take on Boardman’s Sam Deskin. Both are great runners in their own right. Both have great kicks when they need it. I saw firsthand Deskin’s power run on the hilly terrain of the Canfield Fairgrounds. Running less than 16 minutes. Reminds me of Niles’ Chris Acs. Although I can’t say I saw him run, I hear the stories and look at the times. Deskin should be considered as one of the favorites for the Division I title this year. He’s got a ways to go since he just broke the 16 minute barrier, but I have a feeling he can shave some time at the Boardman course and at Scioto Downs.
Take Rupe. I saw him in this year’s indoor state track meet, coming in with the 13th best time in the mile. He hammers the competition with a helluva kick that dusted the competition at the, ARGH, University of Akron. Look at my hat and you’ll tell how much I love the Zips. Although I’d have to pick Deskin over Rupe in a one-to-one race, I wouldn’t discount the competitiveness. However, if you have to ask which team has a better shot to win a state title. No doubt. Maplewood.
Just a couple of thoughts …
