Maplewood, Berkshire girls at state meet

Blond hair, pig tails bouncing up and down with every elongated stride. Welcome to Minster girls cross country. That’s the view most runners have from behind. Considering this has been the end all, be all program for the past decade, it seems this team is … unbeatable in Saturday’s Division III race starting at 11:05 a.m. at Scioto Downs in Lockbourne.

Spencerville, the second-ranked team by OATCCC.org, seems to have the upper hand, or inside track, to second place.

Really, not many are expecting more than a Minster win, Spencerville place and a show between Berkshire and Maplewood.

I’m here to tell you it can be different. Things can happen. I never thought Gilmour Academy’s team wouldn’t qualify for state and Maplewood’s girls would edge Berkshire’s girls for the Boardman regional title.

Granted, I knew Maplewood had a great one through four. Question remained with its number five. However, she came through valliantly and put another regional title on the Rockets’ mantle.

I just know if Berkshire runs with a chip on its shoulder and channels that determination into their respective 3.1-mile runs and Maplewood improves on last week’s times, it may not be, as expected, Minster and Spencerville.

It’s highly probable that Minster and Spencerville will finish 1-2, but stranger things have occurred at the state meet.
