2018 Windham - Ravenna Arsenal Half Marathon / 5K

More Event Information:
  • The Ravenna Arsenal / Camp Ravenna has officially been renamed as Camp James A. Garfield
  • There will be a 3 1/2 hour cut off for the races. The gates to Camp James A. Garfield will close at 12:30 PM.
  • Windham High School and the stadium area will be open and available to spectators during the event. There is very limited access for spectators in Camp James A. Garfield. A 10 passenger vehicle will be available to transport a limited number of spectators to bleachers at near the 5 mile mark of the half marathon. They will then be transported back to the finish / start area. Spectators wanting to use this transport should have a photo ID with them.
  • The 5K and Half Marathon Races both start at 9:00 AM at Windham High School.
  • The surfaces for both the 5K and Half Marathon are 100% paved and in very good condition.
  • Packet pick up will begin at 7:00 am on the morning of the race in the cafeteria in Windham High School at 9530 Bauer Avenue, Windham, OH 44288
  • Both races will start at 9:00 am in front of the high school. The finish line for both race is also in front of the high school. The first quarter mile and last quarter mile of each course is near Windham High School. All of the rest of both courses is inside Camp James A. Garfield.

  • There is a 3 1/2 hour time limit on the course. At 12:30, Camp James A. Garfield will close.
  • The surfaces for both the 5K and Half Marathon are 100% paved and in very good condition. There are old, unused railroad tracks that runners must cross as they enter and exit Camp James A. Garfield.
  • Just past the mile mark of the course the two races will split. The half marathoners will turn right and the 5K runners will turn left. The half marathon is a loop course, the 5K is out and back.
  • Water stations are available in the half marathon at 4.5, 7.5 and 10.5 miles. A water station is at the turn around of the 5K. Porta-johns will be found at every water station and at corners of the courses.
  • Half Marathon runners will wear bib tags for timing. 5K runners will wear bibs but have foot tags for timing. The 5K foot tags are to be returned after the finish.
  • Windham High School and the stadium area will be open and available to spectators during the event. There is very limited access for spectators in Camp James A. Garfield.   • Weather is going to be cold (low Saturday night - 25 deg, high on Sunday 37 deg, 10% chance of precipitation). Plan accordingly.
  • Awards will be presented in the cafeteria for the 5K beginning at 10:30 and for the half marathon beginning at noon.
  • A complimentary luncheon of soup, subs, fruit and desserts will be available for all runners after their race. Bibs must be shown to be served. Non participants can purchase a luncheon ticket for $5.
  • Collection of gently worn shoes will be held for needy athletes... there will be several boxes around the finish area that you can drop shoes in to help others.
  • Since the majority of the race is in Camp James A. Garfield, runners should understand that the natural scenery will be great but there will be no frills such as spectators, bands, timing clocks or split mats. Miles will be marked, however.
  • Camp James A. Garfield is currently still in abundant fall colors to make a beautiful course for the races. Some sites of interest that will be passed on the half marathon course include:
    • Mile 1 - Heavy vehicle storage area and dig site (5K also passes this)
    • Mile 2-4 - Round top concrete munition bunkers where WWII munitions were built and stored 
    • Mile 5 - Grenade launcher and hand grenade training site
    • Mile 8-9 - Old Newton Falls Road
    • Mile 11 - 40' Rappelling Tower
    • Mile 12 - Engineering School of Excellence and Helipad  (5K also passes this)
